Skopje, February 5 — An analysis is currently being conducted on introducing a renewable visa for digital nomads—foreigners who want to stay in Macedonia for a period of 3 to 12 months. The Government stated this for Skopje.IN in response to our inquiries.
The requirement for obtaining such a visa is that the person must have remote work with a foreign employer and receive regular monthly income.
The idea for this visa comes from the pre-election program of the now-ruling party, VMRO-DPMNE.
In addition to introducing this type of visa, there are also plans to create a promotional website that will showcase opportunities for staying in Macedonia and provide all necessary information for digital nomads.
"Since this involves inter-institutional cooperation and a more complex procedure, the public will be informed in a timely manner," the Government stated.
At the same time, amendments to the Law on Foreigners are currently in focus. Their goal is to simplify the legal requirements for obtaining temporary residence for work, particularly for foreigners involved in strategic projects defined by a special law.
However, the upcoming changes to the Law do not address the issue of a visa for digital nomads.
In October 2021, legal amendments were proposed to officially recognize digital nomad status, but they were never adopted. These changes, which were part of amendments to the Foreigners Law, never made it into the Assembly.
