The traditional Carnival of Vevchani begins January 12

Vevchani Carnival

Skopje, January 8 — The traditional carnival of Vevchani, one of the most popular in Macedonia, begins on Sunday, January 12, in celebration of St. Basil’s Day (Vasilica).

The music program kicks off on the evening of January 12 with a performance by Paјak, followed by the Macedonian band Area. Around 23, the renowned regional band Zabranjeno Pušenje will take the stage as the special guest of the evening.

The highlight of the carnival, the parade of masks, will take place on the afternoon of January 13. In the evening, performances will include Ljubojna, Naum Petreski, and the orchestra of zurna and drums from Vevchani. Around midnight, Pero Beli and Koki will take the stage.

The carnival ends on January 14 with the event’s traditional finale, a ceremonial dance and the burning of masks, continuing a centuries-old tradition.

Over the years, the Carnival of Vevchani has attracted significant attention from regional and international media, as well as numerous foreign tourists. Vevchani is the seat of the municipality of the same name, which is unique in Macedonia with only one settlement.
